I began working as a freelance editor and proofreader in January 2011 as an assistant to anthropologist and filmmaker David Jobanputra. Since then, in addition to assignments both independently and through David, I've done editing and proofreading work with London-based publisher Istros Books, as well as spending approximately one year as a proofreader and copy editor at Minneapolis agency PERISCOPE.

English is great, but it's also pretty goofy. That's why I'm especially interested in working with international academics and those who don't speak English as a first language, helping them navigate and understand its quirks.

The majority of my experience lies in editing anthropological and sociological work for academics and researchers, but I've also worked on a variety of other projects – from business and funding proposals to works of fiction and even a hymnbook. In addition to working directly with documents, I'm always willing to answer further questions via email or Skype.

I have worked with Emma on a few projects, including an academic conference paper and a research manuscript submitted for journal publication. Emma is an amazing editor and proofreader. She is very clear in her editing and never tries to sound authoritarian. This is very important to me, as some of the previous proofreaders that I worked with made me feel stupid or dumb for the language that I used because I'm a non-native English speaker. She never refuses to answer any questions that I have about grammar, structure, or overall clarity. Emma's help was instrumental to getting the conference paper accepted and my manuscript published. I'll continue to work with her.

Emma is one of the best proofreaders and editors I have ever worked with. She is conscientious, pays attention to detail, and is extremely efficient. She is very good at sensing how much input is appropriate for a given article and provides intelligent and observant insights. She is extremely reliable and has helped me out in many last-minute emergency situations!

I have been working with Emma on my academic writing for a number of years. Her work has been excellent, efficient, and always undertaken with great care and skill. And the end result, as well as our working relationship, has always been great!

Emma has been the proofreader and copy editor of my Ph.D. thesis, and I can unconditionally praise her work. Emma was extremely careful and skillful when it came to grammar, punctuation, and language more generally, and nothing seemed to escape her astute attention. When it came to the substance of the text, she was moreover a most engaged reader, coming up with sharp questions about concepts and word use – and she always offered an alternative, making progress smooth. Concretely, the way Emma went about this was very helpful; when suggesting a more substantial change, she would always do so only by adding a comment, so that I was able to follow potential alterations. Also, Emma sees the whole picture, and with a quite astonishing memory she is able to point out, e.g., where a concept has already been introduced and defined. Finally, Emma is fast and meets all her deadlines as agreed without ever compromising the quality of her work. Friendly and witty to communicate with, I can only recommend Emma’s work.
